Time and Work Concept

Time and work are two fundamental elements that shape our daily lives, both professionally and personally. Understanding the concepts related to time and work is crucial for effective time management and maximizing productivity.

In this course, we’ll explore the core principles underlying time and work calculations. We’ll delve into topics such as the relationship between time, work, and efficiency, and learn how to solve problems involving varying work rates, deadlines, and collaboration.

Example:

John can complete a certain task in 8 hours, while his colleague Mary can complete the same task in 6 hours. If they work together on the task, how long will it take them to complete it?

Standard Formula:

Time taken =Total work/Combined rate of work

Solution:

First, let’s calculate the individual rates of work for John and Mary:

John’s rate:⅛ of the task per hour.

Mary’s rate:⅙ of the task per hour.

Now, let’s find the combined rate of work when they work together:

Combined rate=John’s rate+Mary’s rate

=1/8+1/6

To add these fractions, we need to find a common denominator, which is 24.

= 3/24+4/24

= 7/24 (combined rate of work)

Finally, let’s use the standard formula to find the time taken when working together:

Time taken=Total work/Combined rate

=1×24/7

≈3.43 hours (rounded to two decimal places)

So, when John and Mary work together, it will take them approximately 3.43 hours to complete the task.
